New to Swimming? Here’s What You Need to Know

Starting something new can be exciting—and a little intimidating. Whether you’re jumping into the pool for the first time or returning after a break, swimming is one of the best choices you can make for your body and mind. Here’s some advice to help you start strong and stay motivated:

1. Start Slow and Focus on Technique

It’s tempting to try and swim lap after lap right away, but good form matters more than distance when you’re starting out. Focus on body position, breathing, and timing. Quality over quantity builds a strong foundation.

2. Get Comfortable in the Water

Don’t rush. Spend time getting used to how your body moves in the water. Practice floating, gliding, and breathing at your own pace. Confidence comes with familiarity.

3. Use the Right Gear

A well-fitting swimsuit, goggles, and swim cap (if needed) can make all the difference. Don’t be afraid to ask for help finding gear that works for you—it should be comfortable and functional.

4. Be Patient with Yourself

Swimming uses muscles and breathing patterns you may not be used to. You might feel tired quickly at first—and that’s okay! Progress in swimming takes time, and every stroke is a step forward.

5. Ask for Guidance

Whether it’s a coach, a swim class, or a more experienced swimmer, don’t hesitate to ask questions or seek feedback. Everyone was a beginner once.

Swimming is a skill and a sport that will serve you for life. Stick with it, celebrate small wins, and most importantly—have fun in the water!

See you at the pool,
